A festival of poetry by 17th century poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai – featuring folk singers from Kutch, poetry readings and evocative story telling of the love legends which feature in the Sufi poetry.

Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (1689-1752) is one of the greatest Sufi poets along with Rumi (1207-1273) and Mir Dard (1721-1785), but relatively speaking lesser known. His poetry draws on the power and beauty of Vedanta and Islam...

Prahlad Tipanya is one of the most compelling folk voices of Kabir in India today who combines singing and explanation of Kabir bhajans in the Malwi folk style from Madhya Pradesh. He is performing at a special concert being organized collaboratively by Department of Psychology, Jubilee Hall Students’ Union, and Department of Hindi at Delhi University on the evening of November 24. The Centre for Communication and Development Studies presents “The Practice of Poetry- Making Peace Possible”, a presentation on poetry as an agent of social change by Shabnam Virmani. This is the latest in a series of talks that are being curated under their Keeping the Peace series.

Organised by the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy, Suno Bhai Sadho is a three day festival from the 12th to the 14th of March in Chandigarh. The festival will feature screenings of the four Kabir films directed by Shabnam Virmani and music performances by seven singers and seekers of Kabir- both folk and classical. The festival will be held at the Tagore Auditorium in Chandigarh.

The Auroville Kabir Festival is back after 3 years with a new edition in 2012! Come celebrate the coming together of numerous folk and urban musicians from across the country along with art installations, exhibitions and performances by some very exciting young designers and artists. This festival will take place from the 6th to the 8th of April, 2012 in Auroville, Pondicherry and will also feature concerts in Kalakshetra, Chennai on the 9th and 10th of April, 2012.

‘Kahata Kabir - Thus Speaks Kabir’ is a dance performance by Madhumita, Devasmita Patnaik and Group inspired by the words and music of Kabir. Watch dancers translate folk songs by Prahlad Tipanya, Mukhtiar Ali, Shabnam Virmani and Pandit Kumar Gandharva at the Sri Aurobondo Auditorium, Bharat Nivas in Auroville on August 1, 2012. Show begins at 7:30 pm.

Travel to Lunyakhedi, Prahlad Tipanya’s village near Maksi in Madhya Pradesh, to be part of a 5-day residential workshop that offers a chance to understand the poetry and philosophy of Kabir through the music of Malwa. Prahladji, who is among the foremost singers of Kabir in Malwa, will conduct the workshop along with members of his troupe.

‘Koi Sunta Hai’ and ‘Chalo Hamara Des’, two Kabir films by filmmaker Shabnam Virmani will be screened as part of the ONE ASIA, 2012 in Delhi on December 16 and 19. The screening on the 16th will be followed by a satsang with Shabnam and Malwi folk singer Prahlad Tipanya.

The Kabir Project team crossed the border last year at the invitation of the Lahore University of Management Studies, to have a week long festival on Kabir with students and faculty, which featured the four documentary films, music performances, classroom discussions and an audio-visual exhibit. This led to a rich exchange of ideas and also some documentation with a mandali of Kabir singers living in the desert region of Cholistan in Pakistan who also participated in the festival.

Vasundhara Ni Vaani (Voices of the Earth) is organised by the renowned Gujarati writer Dhruv Bhatt and hosted by the village communities of Dhedhuki, Tramboda, Roopavati and Noli villages of the Panchaal area, close to Chotila town in Gujarat.
